Super sub Matheus Cunha struck a sensational winner as Michael Carrick’s Manchester United triumphed 3-2 at Premier League leaders Arsenal to blow the title race wide open.

The Gunners were looking to respond to victories for rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa and took the lead on 29 minutes when Lisandro Martinez diverted Martin Odegaard’s volley into his own net.

However, the Red Devils hit back eight minutes later when Bryan Mbeumo seized upon a woeful error from Martin Zubimendi to tuck away his 50th Premier League goal.

The visitors continued to grow as a force and moved in front on 50 minutes when Patrick Dorgu exchanged slick passes with Bruno Fernandes and thundered a wonderful 20-yard piledriver in off the crossbar.

Arsenal thought they had rescued a point on 84 minutes when substitute Mikel Merino bundled in a corner, but United became the first away side to win at Emirates Stadium this season when Cunha curled home a stunning 25-yard goal three minutes from the end.

The result means Arsenal suffer their third league loss of the season and see their lead at the summit cut to just four points. United rise to fourth place and have now won their first two matches under caretaker boss Carrick.

Next up Arsenal will aim to finish off the league phase of the UEFA Champions League in top spot when they host Kairat on Wednesday before visiting Leeds United on Saturday in the Premier League.

Manchester United are at home to Fulham on Sunday.
