Assembly members in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have warned Newmont Gold Ghana to prepare for a series of demonstrations if the company fails to meet their demand for asphaltic roads in its host communities.

The warning came during a protest at Kenyasi under the slogan “No Asphalt, No Road.”

Speaking to Adom News on behalf of the protesters, the Assembly Member for the Asukese Electoral Area, Anane John Kwasi, said the group had given Newmont a seven-day ultimatum to respond to their demands.

According to him, the ultimatum followed interventions by the Ahafo Regional Minister, the District Chief Executive for Asutifi North, and other key officials. He stressed that failure by the mining company to comply would result in sustained protests and picketing.

Mr. Anane explained that the assembly members oppose the construction of double seal (sapete) roads in the five mining communities of Kenyasi No.1, Kenyasi No.2, Ntotroso, Gyedu, and Womahinso, arguing that such roads do not last.

He added that residents are demanding durable asphaltic roads to improve transportation and living conditions in the affected communities.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP James Annor, speaking on behalf of the Regional Minister and the District Chief Executive, commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct and assured them that the Regional Minister would engage Newmont to address their concerns.
