A major fire outbreak on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, destroyed more than 50 shops behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, causing panic among traders, residents, and commuters at the busy transport hub.

The blaze, which erupted in the morning, razed several makeshift structures, most of them mobile phone shops, according to eyewitnesses and officials at the scene.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were quickly deployed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined, some affected shop owners suspect that an electrical fault may have triggered the blaze. No injuries have been reported so far.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Klotey Korle Municipal Assembly are on site assessing the extent of the damage and coordinating relief efforts.
