A 28-year-old man identified as Kweku has died while in police custody at Techimantia in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region, following allegations that he was assaulted by officers during his arrest.
Kweku was reportedly taken into custody after his grandmother filed a complaint claiming that he had threatened to kill her.
According to sources, officers who responded to the report allegedly subjected him to physical assault before detaining him. He is also said to have gone an entire day without food while in the police cell, leaving him weak and unwell.
Police later rushed him to the Techimantia Government Hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, including allegations of assault and possible neglect.
