Fire officers in Hohoe prevented what could have been a catastrophic explosion after a petrol tanker carrying approximately 54,000 litres of fuel veered off the road on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

The tanker, registered GT-1140-18, collided with a high-tension electricity pole and a nearby container shop, bringing down live power lines.

Firefighters from the Hohoe Command, led by Municipal Commander DO III Bismark Hosu Porbley, arrived at the scene within minutes. As a safety precaution, electrical power to the fallen lines was switched off before firefighting operations began.

The team applied foam concentrate to cool the tanker and suppress any risk of ignition, successfully preventing an explosion. Police officers secured the area during the recovery process, and the tanker was later safely towed away.

No injuries were reported, although the vehicle sustained damage to its windscreen and head compartment.
