Former Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has revealed that three top tertiary institutions — the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) — honoured him for his exceptional contribution to Ghana’s education sector during his tenure as Minister of Education.
Speaking in a one-on-one interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, said the recognitions were a testament to the impact of the reforms he implemented during his time at the ministry.
“I was honoured by UEW, UCC, and UPSA because of the exceptional work I did as Minister for Education,” he said. “They told me that among all the education ministers, I stood out for improving the system and pushing meaningful reforms that changed the face of education in Ghana.”
He explained that the institutions acknowledged his efforts in strengthening teacher education, promoting professionalism, and introducing legislative reforms that shaped the education landscape.
“UEW is a teacher education university, UCC is also a teacher education university, and UPSA is a professional education university. They all honoured me because I worked closely with the professional societies, passed their laws, and laid important bills in Parliament. They appreciated that I understood the system and worked with them to improve it,” he added.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also cited the success of the double-track system, noting that it helped expand access to education and produced excellent results.
“From the 2021 cohorts into secondary schools, the double-track system was so successful that, for the first time in West Africa, the top three students in the 2020 WASSCE were all from Ghana,” he said proudly.
