The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has urged residents of Kwahu to exercise restraint, assuring a swift investigation into the ongoing chieftaincy disputes in the area.
Led by Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, REGSEC held a meeting with the Kwahu Traditional Council (KTC) at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Koforidua.
The minister expressed deep concern over the situation and called on chiefs to be patient while she reviews the petition and engages the regional house of chiefs to fast-track the dispute resolution.
Highlighting Kwahu’s significance as a major tourism hub covering about a third of the region, Ms. Awatey emphasized that instability there would negatively affect regional leadership and governance.
She acknowledged that errors can occur during police operations under stress, as happened in the recent dawn raid. The minister admitted that the queenmother of Kwahu should have been invited for questioning rather than handcuffed and apologized to the KTC, promising that the matter would be addressed.

“When local chieftaincy disputes escalate, we seek guidance from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and involve the police where necessary. Mistakes happen because officers are human, but they are never intentional,” she said.
Ms. Awatey also noted her communication with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, regarding the KTC petition, stating that she will respond promptly once the petition is formally received.
“I know the people of Kwahu are highly aggrieved, and so is REGSEC. Peace in Kwahu is critical for the region, and we expect the regional house of chiefs to act swiftly or refer the matter to the national house of chiefs if needed,” she added.
Leading the KTC delegation, Kwahu Adontenghene & Chief of Abetifi, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, explained that the IGP did not order the dawn raid and recommended the council engage REGSEC due to Kwahu’s location in the Eastern Region. He also outlined the background to the destoolment of Eugene Asante Boadi and the enstoolment of Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng, noting that the kingmakers had followed due process.
The KTC appealed for prior updates on developments in Kwahu before any future raids and urged engagement with the regional house of chiefs to mediate for peaceful resolution.
Other REGSEC representatives at the meeting included ACP Williams Boateng (representing DCOP Joseph Owusu), Eastern Regional Security Coordinator Annor Domprah, and RCC Director of Administration Peter Asante.
The KTC delegation also featured Abene Krontihene Nana Simpe Owiredu III, Kwahu Baamuhene Nana Ntim Sampong II, and Queenmother Nana Adwoa Gyemfua III, among others.
