Comedian Funny Face has opened up about his time at the Pantang Mental Hospital, offering a rare and emotional look into his recovery journey and the realities of mental health treatment.

The actor, who has battled mental health challenges in recent years, recounted his experiences during an interview on the Real Talk Podcast, saying he hopes his story will help Ghanaians better understand the struggles of those dealing with similar conditions.

Describing daily life inside the facility, Funny Face recalled sharing a room with another patient whose pain revealed itself every night.

“One of the men I stayed with was a wealthy, responsible person. We were in the same room, and he slept on the top bunk while I took the lower one because he was there before me. Every night around 3 a.m., he would shout, ‘Oh Adwoa Serwaa, why?’ You can’t even laugh, no matter how it sounds,” he said.

He noted that the early-morning hours at the facility were especially difficult, describing the atmosphere as heavy and unsettling — a period when many patients struggled the most.

Avraham Ben Moshe, who joined him on the podcast, pushed back against claims that such moments were spiritual. Instead, he explained that emotional episodes intensify at dawn because of the nature of certain mental health conditions.

Funny Face’s struggles became public following the breakdown of his relationship with his ex-partner, Vanessa Nicole, with whom he shares three children. The tension between them, along with his emotional outbursts toward her and several public figures, signaled a decline that eventually led to medical intervention at both the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and later the Pantang Mental Hospital.

Now reflecting on those experiences, Funny Face says he wants Ghanaians to show more empathy toward people dealing with mental health issues.

His hope, he said, is that sharing his story will break stigma and encourage more compassion for those suffering in silence.
