The National President of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF), Michael Tetteh Kwetey, has appealed to the Government to ensure the timely release of funds for the effective implementation of agricultural policies and programmes. According to him, farming activities are highly time-bound and depend on specific seasons, making delayed funding a major setback to productivity.
Speaking at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration held in Ho in the Volta Region, Mr. Kwetey commended the Government for introducing sound and promising policies aimed at transforming the agricultural sector.
However, he emphasized that the success of these initiatives hinges on the prompt availability of financial resources.
He therefore called on President John Dramani Mahama to prevail on the Finance Minister to disburse all required funds without delay, noting that late releases often undermine the impact of well-designed agricultural interventions.
Mr. Kwetey added that farmers and fishermen across the country are ready to embrace government initiatives, but the lack of timely financial support continues to hinder progress in many communities.
Predictable and timely funding, he said, would boost productivity, enhance food security, and improve the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and fishers.
This year’s National Farmers’ Day celebration, held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” brought together farmers, fisherfolk, policymakers, and key stakeholders to honour the resilience and contributions of the country’s agricultural workforce.
The GNAFF President also appealed for increased investment in attracting the youth into agriculture, stressing the need for access to land, financing, technology, and modern tools to make the sector more appealing and sustainable.
“We also call on you, Mr President, and the State to relook at farmer welfare such as pension packages and life insurance (SIC Life), among others,” he added.
Mr. Kwetey reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to partnering with the Government to advance Ghana’s agricultural agenda. He urged stronger collaboration and greater efficiency in funding processes to ensure that every programme achieves its intended impact.
