The DOVVSU District Court in Accra has refused bail for businessman John Odartey Lamptey, who has pleaded not guilty to seven charges after a viral video showed him physically assaulting a woman reportedly his wife.
The court ordered that Lamptey, also known as Nii Adjei, remain in police custody while investigations continue. He faces a charge of physical assault under Sections 1(b)(i) and 3(2) of the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732), following public outrage sparked by the widely circulated footage.
Two other suspects, Louis Odartey Lamptey and Grace Koshie Lamptey, have also been remanded. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit harm after allegedly attempting to confront a female tenant they believed had recorded and shared the assault video.
The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit Magistrate Court ruled that keeping the three in custody was necessary to allow police to complete investigations and to ensure the safety of potential witnesses.
