Deputy PRO of the National Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Irene Sam, says Ghana’s declining WASSCE results reflect systemic challenges in the country’s education system that require urgent attention.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, she attributed the poor performance to persistent issues spanning from basic school to senior high school, which have weakened overall learning outcomes.

“Our education system is not very attractive, and its ripple effect is what we are seeing in students’ learning outcomes,” she said.

Ms. Sam highlighted challenges such as inadequate learning materials, low teacher-to-student ratios, and unconducive teaching and learning environments.

She called on WAEC, the Ghana Education Service (GES), parents, and all stakeholders to review the entire education system and identify practical solutions.

Describing the situation as a “wake-up call,” she said the PTA will intensify monitoring and engage the Ministry of Education to push for necessary reforms.

She urged Ghanaians to avoid politicising the issue and stressed the PTA’s readiness to work collaboratively with the government to support students.

Ms. Sam emphasized the importance of well-trained teachers, noting, “We want well-trained quality teachers who are up-to-date with modern teaching methods and capable of meeting students’ learning needs.”

She also offered the PTA’s support for infrastructure development to ease pressure on the double-track system and called for increased awareness among parents and students on the importance of studying diligently and avoiding exam malpractice.
