Trailblazing Ghanaian biomedical engineer, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, has been inducted as an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) in the United Kingdom, joining a prestigious group of the world’s most accomplished figures in engineering and technology.
Her induction follows her election during the Academy’s Annual General Meeting, which announced 74 new Fellows—comprising 60 Fellows, nine International Fellows, and five Honorary Fellows—representing diverse disciplines including energy, defence, materials science, and biomedical engineering.

Each honouree was celebrated for groundbreaking innovations and significant contributions to advancing engineering and enhancing public understanding of the profession.
Prof. Kaufmann, a pioneering biomedical engineer, is the founder of the University of Ghana’s Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department.

She currently serves as Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences and as an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Her extensive work in academia, research, and engineering leadership has cemented her status as a leading voice in STEM education across Ghana and the African continent.

Outside academia, Prof. Kaufmann is widely known as the long-serving quiz mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), a role through which she has inspired generations of young Ghanaians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Reacting to her selection, Prof. Kaufmann described the recognition as a great honour.
