Former Roads and Highways Minister and MP for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, says constructing a new Accra–Kumasi expressway would amount to duplication if the ongoing dualisation project is fully completed.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Asenso-Boakye clarified that he is not opposed to the expressway concept but insists it must make economic sense within the country’s limited resource envelope.

“It’s not like I don’t want the expressway to be constructed, but it will be a duplication if we finish the ongoing one,” he explained.

“Both projects serve the same purpose, to reduce travel time by about three hours. So what would be the need for another expressway unless government is saying it’s private-sector-led and users will pay to access it,” he stated.

He argued that Ghana cannot afford to invest in two major highways serving the same route within a short period, stressing the importance of prudent use of public funds.

“In the short term, we don’t need an expressway after the dual carriage is completed. It will achieve the same purpose. Resources are scarce, so we need to use them purposefully. It has to make economic sense,” he added.
