The Minority in Parliament has strongly condemned the resolution that led to the referral of their Leader to the Privileges Committee, describing the decision—taken after his name was removed from Ghana’s ECOWAS Parliamentary delegation—as “bogus.”
Addressing the press, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Apiagyei said the caucus is demanding an apology from the Speaker of Parliament and the Majority Leader, arguing that their actions have embarrassed not only the Minority Leader but the country and the ECOWAS Parliament.
Apiagyei explained that the decision to replace the Minority Leader on the ECOWAS delegation was taken without her knowledge or consent. She revealed that she wrote several letters to the Speaker, expressing her displeasure over what she described as a unilateral decision by the Majority Leader.
Referencing international and ECOWAS protocols, she insisted that the mandate of the Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, remains valid and has not expired.
The Minority is therefore calling on the Speaker to rescind the referral and apologise to their Leader.
Responding to claims that the Minority Leader acted wrongly by participating in the ECOWAS sitting in Nigeria, the caucus maintained that he was only upholding the constitution. They argued that the Speaker and Majority Leader are attempting to punish him for performing his legitimate duties and must immediately reinstate his name on the ECOWAS delegation.
