Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, Solomon Kusi Brako, has urged political leaders to be truthful when discussing galamsey, dismissing claims by the MP for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, that illegal mining only began under the NDC administration.

Speaking during a galamsey dialogue at the Akyem Oda lorry station with the Dwaso Nsem team, Mr. Brako described the claim that galamsey started under the NDC as misleading.

“There is no truth in the assertion that during the NPP time there was no galamsey,” he said. “Even under the NPP government, police arrested people involved in illegal mining. The illegality has always existed.”

He noted that the Assembly has consistently worked to ensure miners operate legally. “When miners are fined, we task them to go and do reclamation. It is not true that galamsey started in NDC time, as the MP claimed,” he said.

Mr. Brako explained that many miners were already operating when the NDC assumed office. “When questioned, they said they had permits. As an Assembly, we asked them to register so we could help them obtain the necessary documents to mine legally,” he added.

The MCE noted that the Assembly continues to collect and organize data on miners to ensure they operate through lawful channels. “We are organizing their data to make it easy to monitor them and guide them to use the right channels,” he said.

He also slammed the MP for Akyem Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, for failing to address galamsey in his own constituency. “The MP has never condemned galamsey in his area. Instead, he accuses the NDC of the problem. That is not right,” he stated.

Defending his own integrity, Mr. Brako dismissed attempts to tarnish his image. “The agenda the MP is trying to use against me will not work because I am not corrupt. I have never used my office for corrupt acts,” he concluded.
