Former Member of Parliament for Adentan, Kojo Adu-Asare, has raised concerns that the two-year contract extension granted to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno could set a troubling precedent for post-retirement appointments across government institutions.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Adu-Asare acknowledged the President’s decision, particularly at a time when the country has lost key security figures, including a Defence Minister.
He noted that no president would want to risk creating a leadership vacuum in the security services.
However, he cautioned that the extension must not become a template for other ministries, departments, and agencies to demand similar treatment.
“There is nothing wrong with changing your mind, but my fear is that this could open the floodgates for contract extensions everywhere. Others may say since the President has done it, they also deserve it,” he said.
Adu-Asare described the issue as one of principle, stressing the need for clear communication that the extension applies strictly to the IGP to prevent future misuse.
“I have nothing against the IGP; he has served the country well. But we must be careful not to create room for abuse,” he added.
President John Dramani Mahama approved the two-year extension following a recommendation by the Police Council. Yohuno, who was due to retire in December 2025, will now continue serving until 2027.
