President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has accused influential individuals and politicians of enabling illegal mining (galamsey), making it difficult for Ghana to effectively combat the destructive activity.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Carbonu claimed that many illegal miners operate with the assurance of protection if arrested.
“These galamsey operators are agents of politicians and powerful people in this country. Someone has to assure them that when they are arrested, they will be bailed out. They are the enablers,” he said.
He questioned the low number of prosecutions despite the high number of arrests, arguing that the lack of serious legal consequences encourages continuous environmental destruction.
“We, the people, are part of the problem. We don’t obey laws in this country. Those who try to fight galamsey are often ridiculed by the very people they are trying to protect,” he added.
Mr. Carbonu further criticised policymakers for prioritising political survival over national interest, saying the country is “retrogressing” as a result.
“All aspects of our society need review. The people are not ready for a reset. However, we will not give up hope,” he concluded.
