A major fire has broken out at the Dansoman Market in Accra, with firefighters currently working to bring the situation under control.
According to officials, the first fire tender from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived on the scene within two minutes of the distress call.
By the time crews reached the market, the blaze was already fully developed, prompting an immediate call for reinforcement.
Eight additional fire tenders from the GNFS National Headquarters, Ministries, and Madina Fire Stations were dispatched to support the operation.
After nearly an hour of intense firefighting, personnel have managed to confine the fire, though not fully extinguished.
Several wooden structures and metallic containers have been destroyed.
Regional Fire Officer, ACFO Rashid Kwame Nisawu, said the team faced obstruction from members of the public who had crowded the scene, forcing the Service to call in police officers to control the situation.
He also noted challenges with consistent water supply but assured that firefighters were doing everything possible to contain the blaze.
He added that the Service is planning a public fire safety education campaign for the community once the incident is fully resolved.
The MP for Ablekuma West, Rev. Dr. Kwaku Addo, and GNFS Director of Finance, DCFO Mark Brako Appiah, have arrived at the scene to assess the damage and support ongoing response efforts.
Emergency operations are still underway.
