The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) in the Ashanti Region, in collaboration with LCB Worldwide Solutions, has carried out a large-scale disinfection exercise at the Kumasi Central Market, popularly known as Kejetia–Dubai, to help curb potential disease outbreaks
The exercise, according to officials, is aimed at reducing the population of insects and rodents that have become prevalent in the market environment.
Director of Communications for GUTA, Joseph Paddy, said the initiative forms part of a nationwide effort to fumigate and disinfect major markets. He noted that since the outbreak of COVID-19, no market in the country has undergone such a comprehensive disinfection exercise.

Mr. Paddy urged market managers and traders to maintain strict cleanliness by avoiding indiscriminate urination, littering, and leaving electrical gadgets unattended. These acts, he said, could trigger disease outbreaks or fire incidents. He called for continuous education and advocacy to keep the market environment safe.
He further revealed that the disinfection exercise will be extended to schools, hospitals, markets, and other areas where human activity is high.
Mr. Paddy also appealed to the government to expedite work on the Kejetia Phase Two project to reduce congestion across markets in the Kumasi metropolis.

The Ashanti Regional Vice President of GUTA, Nana Nyame, is optimistic the current administration will deliver the Kejetia Phase 2 project by 2026.
He also highlighted the challenge of electricity meters in the market, explaining that many traders struggle to pay their bills.
Nana Nyame advised the management of the Kejetia-Dubai Market to enforce order and control traders who operate along the roadside, noting that the practice worsens congestion and poses safety risks.
