Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall struck a superb winner as 10-man Everton secured a rare 1-0 victory at Manchester United despite seeing Idrissa Gueye bizarrely sent off for fighting with a team-mate.
The Blues started brightly but their night seemed to turn sour when the Senegal international saw red for striking Michael Keane in the face on 13 minutes.
The visitors recovered brilliantly and took the lead just shy of the half hour courtesy of a lovely solo effort from Dewsbury-Hall.
United huffed and puffed following the interval but they struggled to make their man advantage count.
The hosts turned the screw late on but Bruno Fernandes fired over and the excellent Jordan Pickford made a superb save to deny Joshua Zirkzee.
The result sees Everton climb up to 11th place spot – above neighbours Liverpool on goal difference – courtesy of just a second win at Old Trafford in 33 league visits.
Man United, who surrendered a five-match unbeaten run on the anniversary of Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge, now sit 10th and are above The Toffees by virtue of goals scored.
Next up, Everton host Newcastle United on Saturday evening while United visit Crystal Palace on Sunday.
