Surgical patients at the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra Region are currently forced to share a single ward regardless of gender due to a shortage of beds and limited facilities, hospital authorities have revealed.

The issue came to light when Ghanaian music legend Kojo Antwi donated beds and essential medical equipment to the hospital as part of his birthday celebration on Monday, November 24, 2025.

Medical Superintendent Dr. David Oppong explained that both male and female surgical patients are currently admitted in the same ward because of space and resource constraints. He noted that the situation is expected to improve early next year with the creation of a dedicated female surgical ward.

“We have secured another section that can accommodate about five female patients, so these donations will serve us wonderfully,” Dr. Oppong said. He added that the new ward still requires chairs, tables, and computers, appealing to the public for additional support.

He assured that hospital staff remain committed to providing quality care to every patient, saying: “We will put out our best for every patient, irrespective of who comes.”

Kojo Antwi, who has a long history of supporting health institutions, said the donation is part of his tradition of giving back to the community. “It’s my birthday, so I need to do something for the community. This is not the first time; I began donating when Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng was CEO of Korle-Bu,” he said.

The musician added that the Weija Gbawe Municipal Hospital holds special significance for him because he resides in the community.

Hospital officials and residents expressed gratitude for the timely support, which is expected to ease the pressure on the facility’s overstretched surgical unit.
