The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has welcomed the High Court’s decision ordering a fresh parliamentary election in the Kpandai constituency, describing the ruling as validation of longstanding concerns over alleged electoral misconduct by some Electoral Commission (EC) officials.
Speaking to journalists following the ruling, Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, said the court decision confirms the party’s claims.
“All along, the NDC has highlighted that several crooked electoral officers are bent on stealing people’s mandates. One of these has been exposed today,” he said.
Mr. Tanko added, “We repeatedly stated that Kpandai was an NDC seat. The election was rigged, and we have committed to continuing to expose any electoral officers attempting to manipulate outcomes.”
He explained that the petition was anchored in the provisions of CI 127, which governs parliamentary collation procedures.
“Regulation 43, 1A through H, clearly outlines how parliamentary election results are collated. You gather results using Form 1C, assemble them, then summarise on Form 1D and declare the results. This process was not followed,” he noted.
Mr. Tanko accused certain EC officials of abandoning the prescribed procedures.
“They instead organised themselves, went to Tamale, manipulated some results, and declared Nyindam as the parliamentary candidate-elect,” he said.
He emphasised that the NDC relied solely on lawful means to achieve the outcome.
“The NDC is the most lawful political party in Ghana. We did not resort to any lawless methods. We followed due process and have secured a favourable judgment,” he said.
Mr. Tanko also urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reconsider contesting the rerun, asserting that the NDC is fully prepared.
“We appeal to our opponents in the NPP not to contest the by-election because we are ready to deliver a heavy defeat. If they respect the people of Ghana, they should withdraw, as they did in Tamale Central. We have 30 days to prepare, and we are ready even tomorrow to ensure the seat returns to the NDC,” he declared.
He concluded by thanking the residents of Kpandai for their patience and assured them of continued support.
“We are grateful to the people of Kpandai. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama will continue to implement good projects for them,” Mr. Tanko added.
