Able Seaman Class 2, Precious Sarah Akutor, a 23-year-old naval officer, has successfully completed a 3.1-kilometre open-water swim to raise awareness and funds for children with special needs.
Akutor undertook the challenge to support an initiative focused on empowering women and establishing a dedicated support centre for children requiring specialised care.
She revealed that the idea was inspired by witnessing the emotional and practical challenges faced by a colleague raising a child with special needs.
The Wave of Hope swimming challenge was launched on Monday, November 17, 2025. Just four days later, on November 21, Akutor swam from Busa to Abuka Islands in the Western Region, completing the 3.1-kilometre journey in 61 minutes.
Speaking to Channel One News’ Western Bureau Chief, Akwasi Agyei Annim, after the feat, Akutor described the swim as the first step in a broader mission.
Her aim is to establish a support centre for children of naval personnel with special needs, providing care, relief, and assistance for both the children and their families.
She called on the public to contribute to the project, stressing the importance of community involvement.
“All I ask is for people to support the team so that the children can smile. They need us, and we need them too,” she said.
