The Chief of Defence Staff, William Agyapong, together with members of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, led by James Agalga, visited El Wak Stadium on Thursday, November 20, to oversee the resumed Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise.
The exercise had been temporarily suspended following a tragic stampede on November 12, which claimed the lives of six female applicants and left several others injured.
During the inspection, the team observed the various recruitment centres, including screening, physical measurements, and eligibility checks, noting a more organised and controlled system compared to conditions before the suspension.
To enhance safety, chairs were installed along the screening lanes, allowing applicants to sit while waiting—a key adjustment recommended after the earlier incident.
Officers guided candidates through biometric checks, documentation reviews, and physical selection tests, with senior military officials ensuring tighter supervision throughout the process.
Recruitment in the Greater Accra Region resumed on November 20 following directives from President John Dramani Mahama to pause the exercise, review safety protocols, and restructure the screening system to prevent overcrowding and ensure a safer environment for all applicants.
