The Bono Regional office of the Fisheries Commission has supplied the Sunyani Central Prison with 1,000 tilapia fingerlings and two bags of fish feed to support the facility’s agricultural and self-sufficiency programmes.
Under the leadership of Regional Commander Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Thompson Otsokpo, the Sunyani Central Prison has expanded its farming operations in recent years. The prison now grows vegetables, including cabbage and garden eggs, and operates a fish pond to help supplement inmates’ daily meals.
Speaking to Adom News, the Deputy Bono Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Ivan Kaleo, raised concern over the impact of illegal mining on aquaculture, noting that polluted water bodies threaten the sustainability of fish farming nationwide. He called for urgent national action to protect the sector.
Mr. Kaleo praised the Sunyani Central Prison for its forward-thinking approach and encouraged other public institutions to adopt similar initiatives to improve food security and reduce operational costs.
CST Charles Nana Addae Boateng, who oversees the project at the prison, said the initiative helps address feeding challenges while promoting healthier diets among inmates. He added that proceeds from the farm support the upkeep of the facility.
Beyond food production, the project also serves as a rehabilitation tool, equipping inmates with practical farming and aquaculture skills to enhance reintegration into society after their release.
