Interior Ministry sets six-week deadline for surrender of unregistered firearms

-

The Ministry of the Interior has announced a six-week deadline for all individuals in possession of unregistered firearms to surrender them voluntarily or face strict sanctions.

The nationwide disarmament exercise, part of a broader effort to reduce gun violence, will run from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026.

It aims to curb the circulation of illegal weapons and address the rising number of gun-related incidents across the country.

Under the Gun Amnesty Initiative, citizens can hand over unregistered or illegally acquired firearms without fear of prosecution during the amnesty period.

Launching the initiative, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak warned that anyone found with illicit weapons after the deadline will face severe consequences. He emphasized that the programme is crucial for ensuring safer communities and strengthening national security.

The Minister also announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional celebrations within the amnesty period.

The measure seeks to reduce celebratory gunfire and prevent avoidable injuries and deaths nationwide.
