Ghana’s newly sworn-in Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, says his tenure will focus on building a judicial system that is independent, fair, and accessible to every citizen.
He made the pledge after taking the Oaths of Office and receiving his instruments of appointment on Monday, November 17, 2025.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie noted that the courts must shed the perception of favouring the powerful while leaving the vulnerable behind. He highlighted three key challenges he intends to tackle: delays in the justice process, limited access to court services, and widespread fears of unfair treatment.
“Meaningful reforms are necessary to rebuild trust and make the justice system more efficient and appealing to ordinary Ghanaians,” he said.
President John Dramani Mahama, who supervised the swearing-in ceremony, urged the new Chief Justice to address complaints that courts are expensive, inaccessible to many communities, and not always delivering the expected justice. He assured Justice Baffoe-Bonnie of the government’s full support to resource the judiciary and drive reforms.
Both leaders expressed confidence that a stronger, more responsive judicial system will improve dispute resolution and enhance public faith in the rule of law.
