El-Wak stampede: Gov’t to offer automatic slots for family members of deceased

-

The government has directed families of the six applicants who died in Wednesday’s El‑Wak Stadium stampede to submit the names of qualified relatives for recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), officials have announced.

The tragic incident occurred during a recruitment exercise when hundreds of hopeful applicants surged into the stadium for documentation and body selection, leading to a deadly rush that claimed six lives and left many others injured.

During a visit to one of the bereaved families in Eyan Maim, Central Region, Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Gyamfi said President John Dramani Mahama has instructed that each affected family be given an automatic recruitment slot.

Meanwhile, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, described the incident as deeply heartbreaking and assured that the state will provide befitting burials for the six victims in honour of their service.

A preliminary inquiry by the GAF indicates that the stampede was triggered when applicants breached security protocols and rushed through the gates ahead of schedule.

The government’s gesture aims to honour the memories of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of serving their country and to reassure families of its commitment to their welfare.
