National Peace Council commiserates with families after military recruitment stampede

-

The National Peace Council (NPC) has expressed condolences to families affected by the stampede during the Ghana Armed Forces’ 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at El-Wak Stadium on November 12, 2025.

Reports indicate that 28 people were injured, including 12 in critical condition and five in intensive care, while six individuals lost their lives. A similar incident in Kumasi left five others injured.

The NPC urged the government, businesses, and stakeholders to take urgent steps to address youth unemployment, citing Ghana Statistical Service data showing 32% unemployment among those aged 15–24 and 22.5% for those aged 15–35.

“The occurrence should serve as a wake-up call for all with the capacity to create jobs,” the council stated. It also called on the Ghana Armed Forces to review recruitment processes to ensure the safety of applicants and to adopt modern best practices.

The council emphasized that addressing youth unemployment is crucial to maintaining peace and preventing the spread of violence and extremism.
