GoldBod unfazed by political pressure in fight against illicit gold trading – Deputy CEO

-

The Deputy CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), Richard Nunekpeku, has assured that the agency will not yield to political pressure to release suspects involved in illegal gold trading.

His statement comes amid ongoing efforts to curb gold smuggling and other illicit gold-related activities, following the recent apprehension of 25 individuals in Accra.

“At GoldBod, if you fall foul of the law, we don’t consider party affiliation or take calls from anyone. We will not succumb to any pressure. We will continue to operate within the confines of the law, respect the rights of every individual we arrest, provide them a fair opportunity to represent themselves, and allow them to have a lawyer of their choice in court,” he said.

“We will not, in any way or manner, release or deal with anybody because a call has come from anywhere,” he added.

Mr. Nunekpeku also expressed satisfaction that since its inauguration, the state agency has not received any interference calls, underscoring its independence in executing its mandate.

“So far, that message has been well received, and we have not been receiving such calls,” he noted.

He further emphasized that the agency will continue to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure the successful prosecution of offenders.
