Asante Kotoko exit CAF Confederation Cup after heavy aggregate defeat to Wydad AC

-

Asante Kotoko’s quest to reach the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup has come to a crushing end, following a 6-1 aggregate loss to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club.

The Ghanaian Premier League side entered the second leg at Morocco’s Mohammed V Stadium trailing 1-0 from last Sunday’s first-leg defeat at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko initially responded positively, with Samba O’Neil equalising in the 19th minute after Hamza Hannouri had given Wydad an early lead in the opening minute.

However, Wydad regained control through Burkinabe forward Stephane Aziz Ki, who restored the lead in the 26th minute, leaving the first half 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

The Moroccan side intensified their dominance after the break. South African international Thembinkosi Lorch extended Wydad’s advantage in the 54th minute, before Oussama Zemraoui made it 4-1 with five minutes remaining. Mohamed Bouchouari sealed the emphatic 5-1 victory during added time.

The loss confirms Kotoko’s elimination from the preliminary round, while Wydad Athletic Club advances to the group stage, where they will learn their opponents on Monday, 3 November 2025.
