Political Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop blaming Dr. Bawumia alone for the party’s electoral defeat, stressing that the loss was a collective responsibility.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Tonto described attempts to attribute the defeat solely to Dr. Bawumia, especially on the basis of his religion or origin, as “dishonest, irresponsible, and deceitful.”
“Bawumia cannot be the singular reason why we lost the elections. Anyone participating in that bandwagon should be ashamed. The NPP doesn’t need a showdown now, but rather a sober reflection,” he stated.
He emphasized that all NPP Members of Parliament, including presidential aspirants Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Adutwum, were involved in key economic decisions such as the E-Levy, betting tax, and the government’s borrowing policies.
“If you are a Member of Parliament, you cannot blame Bawumia’s economic management decisions and take yourself out, because there is not a single economic decision that goes into the budget without your vote,” he added.
Kofi Tonto further stated that Bawumia’s skills make him the best choice for flagbearer.
“We want someone with public service experience to lead. His technical skills from the Bank of Ghana, teaching abilities, and experience in multinational positions demonstrate that Bawumia is the best candidate. The challenges highlighted in Bawumia’s story do not make him weak; rather, they showcase his resilience in the face of adversity,” he added.
