Ghana’s extractive sector saw remarkable growth in 2024, maintaining its upward trend with a total of 343 mineral rights granted to various companies, according to the National Development Planning Commission’s (NDPC) 2024 Annual Progress Report.
The report highlighted that the mining and extractive industry achieved outstanding performance, positioning Ghana as Africa’s leading gold producer for the year.
Total gold production rose sharply to 5,059,239 ounces, up from 3,989,792 ounces in 2023, a 26.8 percent increase.
Beyond gold, the NDPC revealed that the country’s overall mineral production, including diamond, bauxite, and manganese — grew by 54.6 percent, boosting the sector’s total value to USD 11.9 billion in 2024.
Despite the impressive growth, the Commission cautioned that illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, continues to pose serious environmental challenges, threatening sustainable development efforts even as formal mining investment expands.
The report also noted that the mining sector made a significant contribution to employment, generating 1,135,242 jobs in 2024. Of these, 35,242 were created in large-scale operations, while approximately 1.1 million were in small-scale mining activities.
