Health Minister blames unpaid nurses’ salaries on lack of financial clearance

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has attributed the delay in paying some nurses and midwives to the absence of financial clearance for their recruitment by the previous government.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Mr. Akandoh revealed that the NDC government inherited about 13,500 nurses and midwives who were recruited and posted by the NPP administration without prior financial clearance.

He said this has created significant human resource and payroll challenges within the health sector.

According to the Minister, the government had two options—either to send the affected health workers home or to retain them while working to secure their financial clearance.

“We chose to keep them and are actively pursuing the necessary processes to ensure they are placed on the payroll and duly paid,” he assured.

Mr. Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving the issue and improving conditions for all health workers across the country.
