The National Coordinator of the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has voiced concern over the continuous delays in the payment of salaries to nurses and teachers nationwide.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr. Vanderpuye observed that the issue has become a recurring challenge throughout Ghana’s Fourth Republic and requires urgent attention.

“It is worrying when, continually in this country, teachers, nurses, and other service staff who are recruited have to spend months before receiving their salaries. It has been occurring frequently.

“In this Fourth Republic, it has always become like a norm that teachers would be recruited, nurses would be recruited, sometimes even doctors, and for months, they wouldn’t be receiving their salaries,” he said.

The former Odododiodio MP attributed the situation to a “structural defect” within the administrative system and urged reforms to facilitate prompt recruitment and salary processing.

“I think it’s a structural defect that we have within our administrative system, and I think we should be looking at how promptly people are employed, and immediately when they are employed, they are captured onto the data system so that their benefits would be paid to them as when they are due,” he added.

His remarks come in response to recent demonstrations by health and education sector workers who report going as long as ten months without pay.
