Garu MP raises alarm over rising non-communicable diseases in Ghana

The Member of Parliament for Garu, Thomas Winsum Anabah, has expressed deep concern over what he describes as a growing national crisis of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and mental health disorders.

Speaking at the maiden Ghana Health and Labour Summit (GHL Summit 2025), themed “Mobilising Against NCDs: Safeguarding Employee Wellbeing in Ghana,” Dr. Anabah noted that these conditions now account for about 43 percent of all deaths in the country, most of which are preventable.

The summit brought together over 300 participants, including government officials, labour unions, health professionals, academics, employers, and development partners, to discuss strategies for improving workplace wellness and tackling the rise of NCDs.

Dr. Anabah identified stress, poor nutrition, tobacco and alcohol use, long working hours, and environmental pollution from illegal mining as key risk factors fueling the surge in NCDs, especially among workers.

“These silent killers, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and mental health disorders, now account for over 43% of deaths in Ghana, yet most are preventable,” he stressed.

He urged both public and private sector employers to prioritise employee wellbeing, warning that neglecting workplace health could lead to reduced productivity and increased long-term health costs.
