President John Dramani Mahama has presented a cash reward of GHC500,000 to the University for Development Studies (UDS) following their historic triumph at the FISU World University Football Tournament in China.

UDS made history as the first African university to win the prestigious global competition. The victorious team paid a courtesy call on President Mahama at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, October 7, where they officially presented the trophy to him.

The Ghanaian side clinched the title after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Brazil’s Paulista University in the final.

Despite conceding just 10 seconds into the game, captain Mohammed Sulemana equalized in stoppage time before Ezedeen Alhassan sealed the win with a spectacular strike from a corner kick in extra time.

Commending the players for their resilience and patriotism, President Mahama lauded UDS for “lifting Ghana’s flag high” and serving as an inspiration to young athletes across the continent.

The team returned home on Sunday, October 5, to a rousing welcome at the Kotoka International Airport, where fans and university officials celebrated their historic feat.
