The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declined an invitation from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to participate in a public hearing on proposed utility tariff adjustments for the 2025–2029 period.
In a statement dated October 6, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said it saw “no justification” for discussions on possible tariff hikes at a time when Ghanaians are already burdened by the high cost of living and the introduction of new taxes, including the “Dumsor Levy.”
The party argued that the levy alone generates over GH¢575 million monthly, amounting to more than GH¢5.7 billion annually, which, it said, could be used to support the operations of utility companies rather than increasing tariffs.
The NPP also dismissed claims that the proposed tariff review is tied to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionality, describing the assertion as “palpably false.”
“The NPP finds this unacceptable and will use all legitimate means to resist any attempt to burden Ghanaians with astronomical increases in utility tariffs,” the statement said.
