The Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Area, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, has launched a strong campaign against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey in Kwahu, decrying the devastating impact on the environment and local livelihoods.
Communities affected by the menace include Nkawkaw Amanfrom, Esaase, Wisiwisi, Apradang, and Kwahu Praso.
Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III expressed deep concern over the destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and forests, warning that continued galamsey operations threaten the very survival of farming communities.
He urged the government and security agencies to intensify enforcement efforts and take decisive measures to safeguard the environment.
According to the Kwawuhene, illegal mining has made it increasingly difficult to find labourers for farming activities, calling on authorities to establish fast-track courts and ensure the safety of individuals leading anti-galamsey campaigns.
The Queen Mother of the Kwahu Traditional Area, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua III, also appealed for urgent government intervention, emphasizing that the situation, though dire, is still reversible with collective effort.
