Fisherman jailed 18 months for GH¢20,000 outboard motor theft

File: jail

A 52-year-old fisherman, whose side business involved stealing fishing outboard motors and selling them at Kpando-Tokor, has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment by the Kete-Krachi Magistrate Court in the Krachi-West District of the Oti Region.

The convict, Isaac Adinortey Tetteh, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

According to the case investigator, Detective Corporal Wisdom Tetteh, the convict on April 12, 2025, sailed on the Volta Lake in his canoe with three stolen outboard motors from the Kete-Krachi lakeside, intending to sell them at the Kpando-Tokor market in the Volta Region.

He said Adinortey Tetteh hid two of the motors in an uncompleted building and attempted to sell the third, valued at GH¢20,000.

A prospective buyer, who feigned interest and asked him to reduce the price, turned out to be on the lookout for stolen outboard motors.

Feigning negotiation, the buyer alerted the rightful owner, Dziwornu Zule, who had earlier reported the theft. Within hours, Mr Zule arrived, identified the motor as his, and together with the buyer, they arrested the convict and handed him over to the police.

During interrogation, the convict led investigators to the location of the other two hidden outboard motors.

He was subsequently arraigned before the Kete-Krachi Magistrate Court, where he was sentenced upon his own plea.

Det. Cpl. Tetteh added that investigations are ongoing regarding the other two outboard motors, after which additional charges may be brought against him.
