Police clarify claims half of seized suspected Indian hemp turned into sawdust

The Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into a Kia truck carrying 36 bags of substances suspected to be Indian hemp that was intercepted at Asesewa in the Eastern Region.

The vehicle, with registration number ER-760-23, was stopped on the Sekesua road on September 30, 2025.

A search revealed that while the truck was half-filled with sawdust, it also contained 36 sacks of the suspected narcotics.

Police say the truck was impounded and taken to the Sekesua Police Station, but the driver and his mate managed to escape custody. Efforts are underway to re-arrest the suspects.

The 36 sacks remain in police custody at the Eastern Regional Command, with officials urging the public to disregard false reports claiming the contents had turned into sawdust.

Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau has opened an inquiry into the case as investigations continue.
