
A devastating mining pit collapse at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of at least five people, with several others injured.
The incident occurred on October 1, 2025, at approximately 4:30 pm, when an abandoned mining pit caved in, trapping around 16 to 20 people who were engaged in illegal mining operations.
As of 7:30 am on Thursday, October 2, nine bodies had been recovered, with four others in critical condition.
The Nkawie Divisional Police conveyed the bodies to Nyinahini Mortuary for identification and further directives.
This tragic incident highlights the dangers of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, which has been a persistent issue in Ghana.
The community is calling for urgent action to reclaim abandoned mining sites and prevent further tragedies.
There is increased public agitation for the government and relevant authorities to take decisive action to address the issue of galamsey and protect the country’s environment.
