A district task force against illegal mining, led by the DCE for Bole and District Security Chairperson, Abdulai Muhmod, has destroyed 33 equipment used by illegal miners at Babator on the Black Volta Lake near Bamboi.
The destroyed equipment included four Chanfang engines, nine additional engines, and 20 washing plants.
Speaking to Adom News, the DCE said illegal miners had mounted machines directly in water bodies, polluting rivers that feed into the Black Volta and destroying farmlands.
He noted that the impact of galamsey has reduced soil fertility, making farmers lose interest in farming.
Mr. Muhmod stressed that President Mahama’s government is committed to fighting galamsey, urging residents of Bole-Bamboi to support efforts to protect water bodies.
He warned that illegal mining areas also breed social vices such as drug abuse, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, and school dropouts.
He encouraged the youth to venture into farming instead of engaging in destructive mining activities.
