Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured Ghanaians that the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) government will finish the Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated under the Akufo-Addo administration.
According to Dr. Bawumia, most of these projects had reached advanced stages of construction by the end of 2024, but have since stalled under the current administration.
Speaking to constituency executives and former NPP officials at the start of his three-day tour of the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed disappointment at the situation and renewed his pledge to see the projects completed.
“When we were in government, we introduced policies and programmes designed to improve the lives of every Ghanaian. Some of the major policies was the introduction of the Medical Drone delivery service, a massive expansion and retooling of the National Ambulance Service, and the provision of healthcare infrastructure under Agenda 111, to ensure that we have an enhanced healthcare system in Ghana.”
“But sadly, the new government seems to have abandoned this major investment in healthcare. Nine months into their tenure, there is no indication that they are completing them to improve access to healthcare. This is very worrying.”
He further stressed the importance of the project, pledging that the NPP would complete it if given the mandate.
“I promise you: If they don’t complete them, the next NPP government will fully complete the implementation of this very important investment into our lives and save many lives, even those unborn.”
“Completing these hospitals will not just help to save lives, but will also create many different jobs for the youth of Ghana,” he added.
The Agenda 111 initiative, described as the biggest health sector investment in Ghana’s history, was designed to provide every district without a hospital with a modern 100-bed facility, complete with accommodation for health professionals.
It also covered the construction of regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, the rehabilitation of Effia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, and new psychiatric hospitals for Kumasi and Tamale.
