Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has declared that the team is determined to go beyond securing an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slot, with the ultimate target being a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
The former Asante Kotoko boss led his side to a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in the semifinals of the ongoing WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship on Tuesday night at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.
The win booked Ghana’s spot in the final and, importantly, confirmed their return to the U-17 AFCON for the first time since 2017.
Despite the achievement, Narteh Ogum insists his sights are set higher.
“The target is to qualify for the World Cup. Qualifying for the AFCON alone is not enough, but we want to go to Morocco and qualify for the World Cup,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“I believe we have the players to achieve this target because it has been a while since we saw the Black Starlets at the AFCON and at the World Cup. We will go to Morocco and raise the flag of Ghana high and ensure that we make it to the World Cup.
The coach added that plans are already in motion to strengthen the squad ahead of next year’s AFCON.
“We will try to improve the squad before the AFCON because we have a target that we have to meet, and I will do that with the Ghana Football Association (GFA),” he added.
Ghana will face hosts Ivory Coast in the final on Friday, October 3. The Starlets will be seeking revenge after suffering a 3-0 defeat to the Ivorians during the group stage.
