Future at risk, not just today — Agric Minister warns against galamsey

Eric Opoku , Minister for Food and Agriculture

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has expressed deep concern over the devastating effects of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, on the environment and the well-being of future generations.

Speaking to the media on Monday, September 29, 2025, Mr. Opoku warned that without urgent and collective intervention, the ongoing destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystems could cause irreversible harm to generations yet unborn.

“As for illegal mining, it is not just a challenge to me as a minister or a citizen; it is a challenge to all of us. We are polluting the environment, destroying the land, and our water bodies. So, what future are we bequeathing to the next generation?” he asked.

His comments echo growing calls from civil society, faith-based groups, and environmental advocates for stronger government action against galamsey.

Highlighting the threats to food security, water safety, and ecological balance, Mr. Opoku stressed that protecting the environment must be a shared national responsibility that transcends political or personal interests.
