A fire outbreak at the girls’ hostel of the Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery Training College on Monday, September 29, has left several students counting their losses.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at 12:14 p.m.
Two fire tenders—one from Zuarungu and another from Bolgatanga—were immediately dispatched and arrived at the school within three minutes.
By the time officers got to the scene, the flames had already spread widely, but they managed to contain the situation by 1:20 p.m. and completely extinguished it by 2:08 p.m.
According to the GNFS, five rooms and their contents were destroyed, while six others were salvaged, preventing further damage.
Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Sagoe, later visited the campus to inspect the extent of the destruction. He assured school authorities that investigations would be conducted to determine the cause and measures put in place to prevent future incidents.
Though the exact cause is yet to be established, the GNFS has urged schools and the public to strictly adhere to fire safety practices to reduce risks.
