Fisheries Commission intensifies support for fish farmers in Ahafo Region

The Fisheries Commission says it is stepping up efforts to tackle key challenges facing fish farmers across Ghana.

Speaking at a fish fair in Goaso organized by the Ahafo Regional Directorate, the Commission’s National Deputy Executive Director, Professor Berchie Asiedu, told Adom News that the high cost of fish feed remains a major concern, as most feed is imported. He revealed plans to produce affordable locally made feed to reduce the financial burden on farmers.

Prof. Asiedu also noted that many fish farmers struggle to find reliable markets for their produce.

To address this, the Commission has introduced measures to ensure duly registered farmers have guaranteed access to buyers. “Fish farming is a lucrative venture, and for it to attract more people, especially the youth, the Commission and government are committed to resolving the difficulties farmers face,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Diana Obuobi Sakyibea, highlighted ongoing efforts to educate farmers on value addition. She said the Commission plans to establish a fish hub in the region where consumers can purchase different varieties of fish, including fresh and roasted options.

The fish fair also showcased innovative meals and pastries made from locally produced fish, aimed at promoting consumption and strengthening the fishery value chain.
