Global Patriots Germany has raised alarm over the devastating impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that Ghana could face a future where drinking water must be imported if urgent measures are not taken.
In a strongly worded statement, the diaspora-based advocacy group condemned the ongoing destruction of the country’s rivers, forests, and fertile lands, describing it as a national crisis.
“Our rivers are poisoned with chemicals, our forests are disappearing, and our soils — once rich and fertile — are being destroyed beyond repair. The future of our nation is under attack,” the group warned.
The organisation added that millions of poor families could soon be unable to afford drinking water, while Ghana’s children risk inheriting “poisoned land, contaminated food, and a country stripped of its natural life-support systems.”
Global Patriots Germany called on the government to act decisively, stressing that the fight against galamsey must rise above political interests. “The protection of our water, forests, and farmlands is not a political issue — it is a matter of national survival. No individual or group should be above the law,” the statement said.
Concluding with a passionate appeal, the group urged Ghanaians to unite against illegal mining:
“The time for excuses is over. We must choose between greed and life. Let us stand together to protect Ghana’s future, for the sake of the innocent children who cannot fight for themselves.”
