Illegal miners encroaching transmission towers, shooting at us – GRIDCo

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has expressed concern over the growing threat illegal mining activities pose to its transmission infrastructure, warning that the situation could lead to a major disaster if not addressed urgently.

Speaking at the company’s headquarters in Tema on Thursday, September 25, Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Engineering and Operations, Frank Otchere, revealed that galamsey operators are encroaching on areas around transmission tower sites, digging dangerously close to their foundations.

He explained that such activities compromise the structural integrity of the towers, which are designed to withstand heavy loads and pressure.

Mr. Otchere also disclosed that GRIDCo’s maintenance teams face increasing risks when working in some affected areas.

“Unfortunately, there are some places where our teams come under attack. Some have even been shot at, forcing them to flee for their safety. In such cases, it is impossible for GRIDCo to carry out its operations without security support,” he said.

He called for urgent collaboration with national security agencies to safeguard transmission corridors and prevent the possible collapse of power towers, stressing the importance of protecting Ghana’s electricity infrastructure from further damage.
